A.Over the last year, Trafico, the government department responsible for all road traffic matters has been trying to reduce the terrible death and injury rates on Spanish roads. In 2001, Spain was the third worst in Europe, but careful management is steadily bringing down the accident rates.
Eventually, 500 speed cameras will be installed ‘permanently’ at many locations that are considered accident ‘black spots’. However, unlike the UK, a website, (www.dgt.es/trafico/cameras/carreteras.htm) can show the permanent camera locations on maps for each province. Mobile speed traps, mainly in urban areas, are also being used, but Spain has a fair method where you have to be about 20% over the speed limit before you get a ticket.
